The London Borough of Hounslow has reinvented its civic identity by moving out of a low level 1970s building to free up land for housing, and relocating to a purpose designed site on the highstreet.

With a new high-profile position in the middle of social and retail activity this is an opportunity to re-think the function of the town hall. Also a complicated set of variables to manage, involving the abstract practicalities of construction and a million tangible, more personal questions to be considered and answered.

Appointed as client adviser with a brief to help navigate these sometimes contradictory demands we worked closely with the Hounslow transformation team and with the architectural and services advisers; covering design, detail, operation and procurement and following progress through the construction phase to hand-over and move-in.

The newly named Hounslow House has local services at the centre of this new version of the town hall, with public, administrative & civic spaces all reimagined for updated organisation and work practice; open, flexible, juggling access and security, with coexisting social, work and civic activities. Fit for purpose now and for a long life of changing use – currently adapting to the new post-pandemic working world.

Opened by London Mayor Sadiq Khan in April 2019.
